Well what can you say? you win some, you lose some, but losing to orlando in the eastern conference finals after having the best record in the NBA this season and getting the title of the league's MVP, gotta hurt just a little bit more than any lost ever.
Im not gonna lie I wanted King James to go to the finals to have the show down with Kobe and the Lakers but the story didn't end as planned. So I'm coming out now and saying this before the finals even start, I'm rooting for LA. After seeing that documentary that Spike Lee did on Kobe, I look at him very differently. Dude knows the game. He has a high basketball I.Q and he is a true leader

Brownsville, Brooklyn. Listening to Big Daddy Kane, wanting to grow a high top. Artists like Black Sheep, Blackmoon, Special Ed and MC Lyte on heavy rotation. Recording tracks for fun and amusement, with his crew Children of the Ville, at his homeboy's studio. An activity to keep them off the harsh and brutal streets. Then 2000, 2001, the feedback was so tremendous, that the hobby and the culture he fell in love with became a viable career.

John Sportin is not your typical rapper. He see's hip hop "financially at its best point," but as far as creativity is concerned "people can get a lot better." The element of love has been lost, as the majority of rappers and corporations are "motivated by money."
Will the unsigned phenom become another major label casualty? Will he allow record companies to change the direction of his music that's currently made for the non-Bentley driving, non-crystal drinking person? That's a dilemma he understands. "This is why I'm hot is such a simple song. But I bought the album, to give it a chance and I was surprised, it had banging songs." Record companies require pop songs on albums, trying to ensure a hit album because of all the money they invest in the artist. Mim's debut album had quality tracks, but pop songs are what sell's.

When asked if he would become one of the countless major label casualties, or even another Mims, he responded "The Music Industry is still a business. They're going to try to make me do it their way. But I'm going to pull them in with one song, then when they buy the album, hit them up with the real shit."
While the rest of the music world seems enamored and motivated by money, Sportin is motivated by the love for the music. He would travel to far rockaway to the studio, breaking his pockets to pay for the countless hours he spent recording. But the hustle and networking worked out, because "Now I don't need to pay for studio time." He went from having no manager, no PR, to having a team that networks and promotes his average man oriented music. The response, from the streets to myspace, has been so overwhelming, that Sportin states "All I see is positive things in the future."

Speaking on myspace, it has been a resource of utmost importance to John Sportin. He states how "Myspace is great, but it depends on how you use it." Many artists use it simply to showcase their music. Sportin makes uses his page to also network with people across the globe. This has paid huge dividends, as he has worked with artists such as Bricks, a Germany rapper and a producer from Geneva, Switzerland on a track called "Not on my level." Sportin described the latter track as something for the haters that want to stun your progress. "You grow, your going to see people hate on you." However, he doesn't dedicate too much time to them, simply wanting his brand of positive music to reach people that can appreciate and learn from it.
We also spoke about the Virginia Tech shootings, as Sportin states "That was crazy. I send my prayers out to the families." He described the chaotic and tumultuous event as something unexpected. In a Brownsville perspective, he adds "A lot of people leave their neighborhoods to leave the shootings. They don't expect to leave the hood and get shot in school."

That makes his music even more imperative. He describes the album in the making as a "Transition, from whatever negative stage a person is in, to a positive one. From being an Unsigned rapper to a superstar, from being unemployed to employed." The good movement is one that Sportin is currently experiencing, leaving the barricades of negativity to a future that looks as bright as a summer sun. Through motivational songs and personal tracks, he hopes the listener will be inspired to feel the same way.
He doesn't want to be a duplicate or make music about the flash and bling prevalent in a lot of rappers lyrics.

He wants people to know that they can "Ball out on (they're) budget," and still be content. Above all, he wants people to "Stay Positive."

Memorable studio sessions of 2006

Since 2006 is basically over, I figured it was only right to reflect on some of the hottest studio sessions that I was apart of this year. No hard feelings to any session that I didn't mention in this post.. its just that these sessions had something else to it more than just creating a hot song.

So with that being said Lets Reflect.........

- "DARK IN HERE" session (w/King of Spade)

This session was mad funny.. It felt like I couldn't stop laughing. Spade had the whole studio rolling, dude had like $30 worth of candy on him..all flavors, shapes and colors shit was crazy..but we knocked the track out in like 15Min's and it came out crazy.. shout out to King..

- "PLAYA" session (w/Kevin Lyttle)

This session was crazy.. I walked in the studio and Zee played me the beat and I was blown away, the beat was some 2039 type shit.. the vibe was so crazy, it was one of them beats that you can just play with out the lyrics and you will still be bugging out.. anyway I wrote some shit to it.. and out of no where Kevin Lyttle pops up at the studio, we start vibing on the beat together and poof.. that's it, a hit was born.. 4am type shit and I had to get up for work in 3hrs.. what you know about that .. that's the grind tho ...shout out to Kevin

- "I DONT WANNA WAIT" session (w/Sha'Leah Nikole)

This session was crazy too, just for how it came about.. peep this real talk.. I got the beat from my man.. in the "A" (shout out to 2Golden Productions) on a Thursday night, I loved the beat so much that I must have played it like 40 times... called my girl up from L.A and told her I needed her on the hook for this song cause I know she would have took it to a level where it needed to be at. Coincidental she was packing her bags to come over to NYC the next day which was that Friday, I go uptown to pick her up and we wrote the song on the A train from 145st to Rockaway ave in BK (20-30Min's train ride)...we arrived at the studio layed the track down and the rest is history...shout out to Sha'

- "GRIME CENTRAL" session (w/Crook & Zee)

Session was crazy.. I'm literally coming home from having surgery on my ear
Zee hit me up like yo "drop what u doing and get to the studio" I get to the studio
my nigga crook is there (shout out to Soul Driven) listening back to his verse on the track, Zee plays me his part.. and told me to fill in the blank..and that's what I did.. U.K Grime Central shit, now that track is getting played by alot of DJ's in the U.K (FYI: U.K = United Kingdom)
shout out to Zee and Crook..."Great Zee is in the fucking booth"

- "CALI TO BROOKLYN" session (w/H2)

This session was hot literally ... we did this joint during the infamous heat wave I swear it was like 119 degrees outside, and we was in the hot ass studio eating some hot ass beef patties..lmao... This was another left coast connect tho .. My boy H2 came out from the bay area Cali knocked out this track with me.. which is definitely gonna make the industry pay attention... additional heat added by The Great Zee..that beat was so mean...shout out to h2 & bad boy records Dj Finesse for making the collab possible..

Jackson: How the hell are you man?

Sportin: Everything is good Jackson! Im doin my thing!

Jackson: Whats been going on since the last interview?

Sportin: A whole lot! The buzz has been getting crazy man! I like being me right now!

Jackson: Is that right?

Sportin: Hell yeah! Im starting to get a lot of attention from a lot of different people in the business. Im excited! Labels are reaching out to me and my manager Robert Wallace and since the last time we spoke Ive been grinding like crazy!

Jackson: I can feel your energy right about now but I must say Brooklyn is pushing out Rap Artists like a pregnant woman delivering a new born baby. Im also hearing about these two new artists making noise too! Papoose and Gravy who are also from Brooklyn. Do you know any of these artists?

Sportin': Yeah! I know of them but not personally.

Jackson: What is it about Brooklyn and rap?

Sportin': What can I say Jackson. Its a lot of hip hop lovers in the BK and the majority of people in Brooklyn listen to Hip Hop more than they listen to any other genre. Plus every young female or male wants to represent Brooklyn to the fullest.

Jackson: Where do you rank yourself with the two artist just mentioned?

Sportin: I respect both of those artists. As far as Im concern they both are putting out good material but Im a good artist myself and with that said, my pops always told me never put another man above myself. So you know Im putting myself in the number one position.

Jackson: When do you think your music will be available for purchase in the Record Stores?

Sportin': Mid-summer for sure! Depending on pending situations.

Jackson: Whats going on with your record deal you shouldve been signed by now playboy?

Sportin: Yeah I know! Were just waiting on the right situation to come forward thats all! You know how that goes.

Jackson: Since launching your new web page 1. www.johnsportin.com what the listeners have to say about your music?

Sportin': weve been getting a lot of good feedback, people been hitting it up and requesting more and more music.

Jackson: You have a sound of your own but you really do sound like the Notorious Biggie Smalls. Do you have any new songs that I have not heard?

Sportin': People tell me that I sound similar to Biggie all the time! What can I say but to answer your question I have a lot of new music. We complete like a good 6-7 songs a week. I basically live in the studio, I go to the studio right after work, I spend my weekends in the studio, eat dinner at the studio everything. No Joke! Ha Ha!

Jackson: Do any radio stations give you air play?

Sportin': Hell Yeah! The radio stations been showing your boy plenty of love. Im talkin radio stations out side of New York, even a few in other countries. Im getting a lot of love on thebestjams.com So I'm happy about that!

Jackson: What has been the hardest hurdle to obtain the ultimate of goal a record deal?

Sportin': Patients! Some days I hear a voice in my head telling me that its taking too long and sometimes it feels like its never going to happen but when I look back at where Ive come from it just gives me more motivation to go in the studio and work harder on more material.

Jackson: I get a lot of comments from people who read my interviews. What I want to do with you is give out a dozen or so of your CDs to folks who want to check you out! Can we do that playboy?

TOUR: You're an eighties baby and you stand six feet six inches tall and you are making your presence known in the music world. Why music and why not football or basketball?

Sportin': I played basketball all my life. When I got to high school I started running track, earned myself a scholarship for college. I also ran track for two years in college. I even got all-American honors off it. But music was always my first love. Since I was 8 years old I was involved in music.

TOUR: Ok so what was life like growing up in your neighborhood?

Sportin': It was fun and interesting. I was born in Crown Heights and I lived there until I turned twelve years old then I moved to Brownsville. Anybody that knows about Crown Heights and Brownsville can tell you that nothing is nice out there but I love it because I'm comfortable there. Its my home right now! If I go to a quiet environment that's when Ill get nervous. Sounds crazy but I am use to hearing noise, sirens, gun shots and fights all the time...sad right ...but true!

TOUR: To some people Brooklyn is a dangerous place to live. So tell me whats good about that part of New York?

Sportin: Its so diverse with so many different cultures and religions. Plus anything can happen at the drop of a dime. You never know what can happen at any moment and that's exciting to me.

TOUR: Who or what influenced you into music?

Sportin': Since I have a west Indian background I grew up on Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, and Peter Tosh. As far as hip hop I grew up on Big Daddy Kane, Special Ed, Wu-Tang, EPMD, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Nas, 2pac and of course Biggie Smalls (Christopher Wallace)

TOUR: Already you are being called The New Rhyme Slinger in Hip-Hop. Do you think you can stand up and defend yourself from challengers who think they can crush you with their lyrical skills?

Sportin': Oh yeah no doubt! I grew up on battling. When I started rapping my crew and I use to go around to different neighborhoods in Brownsville just to battle other kids that were rapping. This is before 106 & Park, Free Style Friday was even dreamed about. So I am not a stranger to people trying to battle with me. But I am more of a song writer. I don't sleep man, I stay busy.

TOUR: Do you think Brooklyn , N.Y. is giving birth to better skilled artists than other areas like New Jersey or lets say the Dirty South?

Sportin': Look! Brooklyn has always been and always will be known to have some of the best lyricist that ever blessed the microphone. Example: Biggie Smalls, Jay-Z, Foxy Brown, Big Daddy Kane, Lil Kim, Mos Def, list goes on and on. Man, I think it is more of the new artists in BK knowing the history of having hot artists from BK and were just trying to keep the tradition going basically.

TOUR: You are currently shopping labels with your CD right now called, "Sportin Illustrated" What's so special about this CD?

Sportin': My CD is what you been looking for.

TOUR: This CD is what I’ve been looking for?

Sportin: I know you guys been buying other people cd's and not being fully satisfied with your purchase. I know what you been needing, I got-cha a fix my man! Trust me Im The New Rhyme Slinger. Ha-Ha! I know what the other dudes wasn't doing and that's what Im doing on my CD and thats telling the truth, keeping it real with everybody. People that really know me prior to this music can co-sign the truth on my CD. For all the new people listening to it for the first time will feel like they know me just off the tracks..

TOUR: If it was garbage, I would tell you right here, right now but I must say the demo that your manager sent to me had me bopping my head. Its pretty hot. Have you ever had someone say you sound like the Notorious Biggie Smalls?

Sportin: Thanks! Yeah I’ve been getting the biggie comparison. Even before Biggie even passed away people were telling me that I sound like him.

TOUR: What is it about the music industry you dis-like?

Sportin': I don't like the phoniness, I wish everyone can be treated as a business man/woman and just get what they deserve.

TOUR: What do you like about this business?

Sportin': I like the fact that the industry gives me a floor to tell the world my story. Like I have the opportunity to reach out to millions of people with my music and that's whats up. Plus I like the chances of being able to venture into other fields like fashion and movies.

TOUR: Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Sportin': I see myself as a house hold name in hip hop and as a established businessman assisting others in this game.

TOUR: What advice can you give someone trying to make it in this industry?

Sportin: Keep grinding. Don't take no for an answer. Don't listen to people that's trying to knock your hustle. As soon as you start making moves they will be the first one on the streets talking about how cool you are. And Pray! You got to pray!

TOUR: Your real name isn’t John Sportin. Why the change?

Sportin: Well the name John Sportin represents individuality in this game. When you hear John Sportin its nothing you can really refer to it. The name was given to me before I wrote my first rap, by some of my closest friends..

TOUR: Ok! Why do they call you the Rhyme Slinger?

Sportin: That’s funny! I don’t know. Next time you talk to Rob Wallace or Shayla Day ask them. But I handle my music like I’m hustling. I think they just call me that from my work ethic.

TOUR: How or who decided to call your album "Sportin' Illustrated" ?

Sportin': My first four song demo was called "Sportin Illustrated" back in 1997 and when I told my management about that we both decided to use the name again. It's really a catchy name and it goes well with what I’m doing. Sportin Illustrated illustrates the music that you’re listening to you dig!

JOHN SPORTIN from Brooklyn, New York

What part of New York are you from and what's it like living there?

Ok well I'm from Brooklyn, NY from the Brownsville section and it's basically like every other hood in America there's drugs, violence, poverty, crime. But I love it, because that's what I know and that's what I've been living in all my life and it made me who I am today.

To date what have you released and what's the vibe been like on your music in the US?

I'm actually gearing up to release a street album in a couple of months. I get allot of good reviews and feedback from people, what's shocking to me is that even some rappers have positive things to say, and I know allot of rappers really don't want to say another rapper is good but I've been getting positive feedback from everyone out here, from all regions. Allot of people have been requesting a CD, If you visit my website and look at the guestbook I get questions all the time about a release date and where they can get a CD from so that will be released soon. I want to say early Oct.

Every man and his dog is doing a mixtape these days. Do you have any planned?

Yeah the street album is going to be considered a mixtape in some people eyes, but I didn't want to go the traditionally way of trying to create a buzz, so that's why I'm not doing 100 mixtapes like most artists are. I'm just going to supply everyone with good music with this CD, all original songs.

Why do you think mixtapes are so popular with New York artists?

Because it's seen as the only way to create a buzz. We all know how vital a buzz is for your career so that's why allot of rappers go to the mixtape route to get the buzz.

Why don't they press up mixtapes properly in boxes with 4 page artwork etc like they do in the South and The West Coast?

I believe that the east coast is not as supportive to a new artist like the south and the west coast is. In the south someone can just start making Cd's, package it up nice, and people will be there to support it, the same thing in the west, out here on the East Coast. You either have to have a "big name dj" hosting your mixtape or a signed rapper co-signing you before even get noticed.

So what DJ's out there are giving ya love?

Wow... it’s a lot it will be unfair just to point out a few but, the ones that stick out is Dj Biggie, Dj Big Dave, Dj One shot deal, Dj Finesse (Bad Boy's Ent Dj), Dj Lex and a lot of others been showing me a lot of love.

Your style is reminiscent of Biggie. Has anyone ever mentioned this before?

Yeah I've got that allot when I was younger even when BIG was alive, people been telling me that that is just how my voice and my accent is. I don't try to go in the booth and sound like BIG or anything like that; I just go in and try to make the best music that I can.

Do you plan to work on an album?

Oh yeah right now I've been recording allot of songs, I think since 2006 started and were in August right now I have close to 300-350 songs on stash so me and my team will be able to pick the best songs for a album.

How does your production?

I have a crazy in house production team so I'm always laced with the hottest beats, my main producer The Great Zee gives me allot of hot stuff, so do Charackta, Audio Crack and Rob Green.

What's your biggest achievement in the music industry to date?

Just gaining the attention of allot of majors and producers in a short period of time. And accomplishing my daily goals and exceeding my limits.

Is there anything you'd like to add?

Just wanna send love to everyone that supported me from day 1, because it definitely helped me out and the haters where would I be without you guys... you guys are truly motivation to me the street album will be out within two months it's going to be crazy.
